چکیده

Mandelbrot introduced the concept of fractals to describe the nonEuclidean shape of many aspects of the natural world. In the time series context he proposed the use of fractional Brownian motion (fBm) to model non-negligible temporal persistence, the “Joseph Effect”; and Lévy flights to quantify large discontinuities, the “Noah Effect”. In space physics, both effects are manifested in the intermittency and long-range correlation which are by now well-established features of geomagnetic indices and their solar wind drivers. In order to capture and quantify the Noah and Joseph effects in one compact model we propose the application of the “bridging” fractional Lévy motion (fLm) to space physics. We perform an initial evaluation of some previous scaling results in this paradigm, and show how fLm can model the previously observed exponents. We suggest some new directions for the future.

Neural network prediction of geomagnetic activity: a method using local Hölder exponents

Local scaling and singularity properties of solar wind and geomagnetic time series were analysed using Hölder exponents α. It was shown that in analysed cases due to multifractality of fluctuations α changes from point to point. We argued there exists a peculiar interplay between regularity / irregularity and amplitude characteristics of fluctuations which could be exploited for improvement of ...

Scaling in long term data sets of geomagnetic indices and solar wind ǫ as seen by WIND spacecraft

Scaling in long term data sets of geomagnetic indices and solar wind ǫ as seen by WIND spacecraft. We study scaling in fluctuations of the geomagnetic indices (AE, AU , and AL) that provide a measure of magnetospheric activity and of the ǫ parameter which is a measure of the solar wind driver. Generalized structure function (GSF) analysis shows that fluctuations exhibit self-similar scaling up ...

Semistable Lévy Motion

Semistable Lévy motions have stationary independent increments with semistable distributions. They can be realized as scaling limits of simple random walks, extending the familiar Lévy motions. Generators of stable semigroups are fractional derivatives, and the semistable generators provide a new approximation to fractional derivatives. Semistable Lévy motions and semistable generators may be u...

Intermittency and multifractional Brownian character of geomagnetic time series

The Earth’s magnetosphere exhibits a complex behavior in response to the solar wind conditions. This behavior, which is described in terms of mutifractional Brownian motions, could be the consequence of the occurrence of dynamical phase transitions. On the other hand, it has been shown that the dynamics of the geomagnetic signals is also characterized by intermittency at the smallest temporal s...

Solar cycle changes in the geo-effectiveness of small-scale solar wind turbulence measured by Wind and ACE at 1 AU

Multi-scale structure of the solar wind in the ecliptic at 1 AU undergoes significant evolution with the phase of the solar cycle. Wind spacecraft measurements during 1995 to 1998 and ACE spacecraft measurements during 1997 to 2005 were used to characterise the evolution of small-scale (∼1 min to 2 h) fluctuations in the solar wind speed vsw, magnetic energy density B2, and solar wind ε paramet...
